NLP is a super instruction manual and advanced re-programming software for the mind. When we were born, we didn’t come with an instruction manual.
Instead, we had beliefs, perceptions, behaviours installed in us from an early age from those closest to us – our parents, our peers, schoolteachers…and so on. Some of those behaviours we developed from a young age may or may not be useful to us as adults.
Why would you want to learn Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)….?
Have you ever…
- been curious why some people are incredibly successful in all areas of their life and wondered what their secret is?
- watched someone glowing with confidence in a social or business situation and just wished that you could make the same impact around you?
- considered what you could do with NLP to win new clients and build your existing business?
- wondered why you haven’t achieved the goals you set?
- felt like you have some emotional baggage or issues that you’d like to get rid of?
- ever delivered a presentation that fell flat on its face and you didn’t know why?
- do you ever struggle in communicating to certain people or do you struggle understanding others?
- held any beliefs about yourself that limit your potential and hold you back?
- does fear govern your life?
- have anything in your life that could be positively transformed for the better with a different way of thinking?
Our mind possesses unbelievable power so consider how good it would be to be able to tap into that power that we all possess and be able to use it both for empowering ourselves and others?
What is NLP…?
NLP is an abbreviation for Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
NLP is an “attitude of curiosity and a methodology that has left behind a trail of techniques” that are extremely powerful in creating long lasting changes in an individual’s state, beliefs, thought process and behaviour.
NLP was developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grinder who studied the techniques and the communication patterns of the world’s most prominent therapists such as Milton Erickson, Gregory Bateson, Fritz Perls and Virginia Satir and applying those methods in therapy sessions. NLP is the study of the mind and of excellence, and it offers many highly effective ways of making changes by helping people gain new perspectives and removing barriers to growth and happiness. NLP is a powerful tool which can be applied to help people change the way they think, feel, behave and respond in a more positive way.
It can help people to achieve their goals and enhance their communication and relationship building skills and move towards success in all areas of their lives. It helps people to let go of negative emotions and behaviours by installing new and more positive ones.
Let’s consider the three main areas of NLP:
Neuro: Neuro refers to the nervous system (the mind) through which our experience is processed via our five senses: seeing (pictures), hearing (sounds), touch (feelings), tastes and smells. As external information is received by our mind, you interpret and form your perceptions and responses to external events. This forms your ‘model of the world’ – the way you perceive external events, situations and people. We then form our internal perceptions of that external event - what that event means to us - the feelings created after that event occurs. Our physiology and our emotional state driven by our internal perceptions then produces our behaviour.
Linguistic: Our words form the basis of language (linguistics), and often peoples’ behaviour will depend on what language you use to talk to them. We can also understand what is going on in the other person by the words they use. And the words they use are not the event or the item they represent (the map is not the territory). Each individual will use different words or a ‘label’ to describe a particular event and each person’s perception of the same event will be different. Also, in NLP we can use language patterns to actually loosen and destroy a problem a client may have.
In NLP, this refers to the habits we indulge in, the way we think and behave. These are equivalent mind programs which run unconsciously, without us consciously being aware of them. Approximately 90% of our behaviour is unconscious. Our ‘mind’ programs have normally either been ‘installed’ by ourselves or by people outside of ourselves such as parents, teachers, coaches, peers etc.
So to summarise, NLP provides you with an instruction manual of how the mind works and introduces you to your unconscious mind.
How does NLP work and how can it help me….?
In NLP, we can choose to ‘re-program’ our minds to achieve different behaviours and outcomes that are far more positive and empowering.
NLP works with our unconscious mind to create positive changes in behaviour, thought, perception, state and communication levels. All learning, behaviour and change happen on the unconscious level. Which is why when you come on the course, we ask you to leave your conscious minds at the door and to retain and attitude of curiosity and an open mind.
The learning part will be easy and the greatest thing is that NLP is easy to learn and on the course we will have fun too!
To join these courses all you need is an open mind, a curiosity and a willingness to learn!
People’s behaviour can be changed through the application and techniques of NLP by changing the internal perception of that event. This changes the emotional state which in turn creates a different behaviour. The great thing about NLP is that it creates the change further ‘up the tree’ – so when we focus on changing the internal perceptions, the behaviour will be different.
NLP is great at teaching you how to take responsibility in life. It’s about being at ‘cause’ – you are in control of your life, you take responsibility for your life and create choices rather than blaming it and those around you for your situation or what you haven’t achieved (effect side). To achieve your potential it is essential that you are at ‘cause’ – it is a very empowering place to be and you create your life and future the way you want it.
Cause = results-take charge-responsibility-choices-empowerment
Effect = reasons-excuses-blame external factors
